Horseback Riding

Fernwood Cove offers English style horseback riding for campers of all ages and riding abilities. Campers receive instruction in riding as well as stable and equipment management. Campers register for either the “One Week” or “Three Week” horseback riding program outside of their regular activity sign-ups. An additional fee for the horseback riding program is applied to tuition expenses for any camper who participates in either riding program. Space in both programs is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. Campers should be registered for horseback riding prior to coming to camp.

Fernwood Cove’s horseback riding program includes knowledge and skills involved with all aspects of riding. Campers will experience riding in the riding ring and on trails in addition to basic stable management tasks including cleaning tack, maintaining stalls and basic horse care. Horseback riding is part of the camper’s regular focus activity schedule which gives campers adequate time in the riding program without taking them from their other scheduled activities. Campers are placed on a rotating schedule within the horseback riding program to ensure equal time is spent developing both riding and barn management skills. Campers in the horseback riding program are also able to participate in inter-camp horseback riding shows and area horseback riding quiz bowls.
The Fernwood Cove horseback riding instructors provide a wealth of knowledge and experience to the riding program. Instructors have many years experience English riding, often including collegiate and advanced level riding. Instructors also have experience in riding instruction and barn management. Riding instructors work with horses daily to ensure their health and soundness. Campers are carefully paired with horses that match their riding capabilities.
One Week Riding
The one week riding program allows campers to experience horseback riding while in camp without having to make a three-week commitment. The one week riding program provides campers with one focus week of riding instruction is ideal for campers who are new to horseback riding. This program allows campers to develop riding skills and an understanding of riding tack and horses while riding in the riding ring and on the trails incamp.
Three Week Riding
The three week riding program is designed for the camper who desires a more in-depth horseback riding experience. These campers will have horseback riding as a regular focus activity each regular activity day of camp. The three week riding develops the same riding and barn management skills as the one week program, but allows campers to further their skill development and work towards more advanced riding skills including cantering and jumps. Campers in the three week riding program area also able to expand their riding skills with more diverse activities such as bareback riding and vaulting.
