VISUAL ARTS

Fernwood Cove’s visual arts facilities provide a welcoming atmosphere for all campers to explore a wide variety of art media while building skills and self-esteem.  Campers are able to experience activities ranging from general arts & crafts activities to more technical activities such as ceramics, painting and sewing (fabric arts).  Each art activity is designed so that campers have a completed project by the end of the focus week.

The visual arts counselors at Fernwood Cove all have very strong backgrounds in a variety of art media.  Many counselors are current students or graduates of university level art programs and specialize in their respective activity areas. Counselors structure their activities so that campers build skills and understand the techniques involved with each project.  The Fernwood Cove visual arts programs also stress the importance of safety and having fun.

Arts & Crafts
The Arts & Crafts program at Fernwood Cove offers a wide variety of general craft activities.  The activities offered often varies from week to week depending on camper interest and each counselor’s background and skill base.  Campers have the option to choose from activities including but not limited to: Jewelry Making/Beading, Screen Printing, Life Drawing, Comic Book Illustrations, Stained Glass Mosaics and Scrap Booking.

Ceramics

Campers are given the opportunity to complete a piece of ceramic pottery from beginning to end in the Fernwood Cove ceramics studio.  Beginning campers learn the skills of hand building to complete a project of their choice.  As campers build their skill level they are able to learn how to “throw” on the potting wheel.  Campers also learn how to glaze their completed pottery pieces.  Each camper’s completed project is fired in the kiln by the ceramics instructors and ready to take home at the end of the camp session.

Painting

Landscape and Abstract painting are continually top activity choices among campers.  Both of these activities allow campers to learn the techniques and skills involved with acrylic painting.  Campers learn brush strokes and color layering techniques while replicating a landscape painting of the beautiful Maine landscape.  Campers who take abstract painting create individual pieces based on examples provided by painting instructors.  Each camper’s abstract painting is only limited by the bounds of her creativity and imagination.

Fabric Arts
Pillows, pajama pants, handbags- oh my!  All are possible in the Fabric Arts program.  Campers are able to learn the basics of sewing while completing a skill level appropriate project.  Counselors guide campers through each step of completing their project, including fabric selection, how to use a pattern, and using the sewing machine.  Each camper completes a project during the focus week and is able to participate in the Fabric Arts Fashion Show at the end of the camp session.
