Safety at Camp – Prepared for the Unexpected

Safety at Camp – Prepared for the Unexpected

At Fernwood Cove, camper safety is not just a priority — it is the foundation of everything we do.
While the natural beauty of our Maine setting is part of the camp experience,
our location, facilities, and training are intentionally designed and maintained
with safety and preparedness in mind.

Location Advantages

  • High Elevation & No River Exposure: Fernwood Cove is not located on a river or in a floodplain.
  • Low Risk for Severe Flooding: Our terrain and drainage make large-scale flooding virtually impossible in our region.

Emergency Preparedness & Infrastructure

  • Detailed contingency plans for natural disasters and external threats.
  • Two hurricane-rated buildings capable of sheltering the entire camp community.
  • Backup generation for critical facilities, with long-term fuel reserves on site.
  • Ample food supplies to sustain camp operations independently for weeks, extendable for months if necessary.
  • Dedicated fire suppression network supplied by a high-capacity water source, providing rapid access to firefighting equipment anywhere on camp property.
  • Comprehensive fire safety program with annual training for designated fire teams during pre-camp staff training.

Staff Training & Emergency Response

  • Leadership and activity staff include certified lifeguards, first responders, and nurses.
  • Missing person and violent intruder procedures are trained and rehearsed by staff to ensure swift, coordinated action if ever needed.
  • The camp director is a former combat veteran and trained swiftwater rescuer, bringing advanced crisis management and tactical preparedness to camp leadership.
  • Annual emergency drills prepare both staff and campers to respond quickly and calmly to any situation.

Ongoing Vigilance

  • Continuous monitoring of weather conditions and regional events.
  • Preemptive adjustments to schedule and activities when environmental concerns arise.
  • Ability to shelter in place for extended periods with full access to food, water, power, and medical resources.

Our Philosophy

While some may joke about “prepping,” we believe in being thoroughly prepared.
Our systems, resources, and training ensure that Fernwood Cove is ready to respond
to the unexpected — so your daughters can enjoy every moment of camp knowing
they are safe, supported, and cared for.
