Fernwood Cove – 8/4Posted by on August 05, 2015

Tuesday’s Blog was written by Metal Smithing Counselor and 2/3rd Grade Bunk Mom, Lucy.

As every morning, I woke up to the sunlight seeping through the mosquito-proof windows of Chickadee and picked up my trumpet to wake up the bunk line. There’s nothing quite like playing Reveille from the Tree. I can hear the echos soaring across the lake and the groans of the campers and counselors as they know it’s time to get out of bed. I love my job!

After flag-raising, breakfast (which was the timeless classic; berry muffins) and clean up I skipped with two of my girls, Breanne and Kari, to our first focus of the day. As always, mine was metal-smithing (aka the focus that I teach) so I have the advantage of not having to remember which class I need to go to next. Today we were working on our silver pendants and were finally attaching our hooks and cups for the semi-precious stones we were going to attach. They’re coming along amazingly! We started polishing the metal to give it the shine that silver is known for. In my opinion, the pieces that these girls have made look just like those that you’d expect from a specialist boutique in silver pendants. The design has been personalized and changed, with hearts and circles and tear drop shaped charms filling my department. I feel these girls are coming along in leaps and bounds! I’m actually getting a little big-headed at the quality of their work.

Lunch was the ever-loved chicken stuffed with creamed broccoli and a side of rice. I’ve gained an appreciation for the chicken/cream/broccoli combo more than I thought I ever would. It’s genius! Beats a kiev any day. OD C’s Captain performed brilliantly with his announcement to meet at the flag pole – Dressed as Carolyn the Chef! An impressively convincing impression which was much appreciated throughout the staff and campers. We were also warned of ‘wanger bangers’ that could occur during the afternoon. If you were like me and have absolutely no idea what they are then I’ll explain it. A ‘wanger banger’ is a very exciting storm that prevents everyone from playing by the flag pole with metal hats on and flying kites. It creates nature’s fireworks (something you and I would call thunder) and stops you from being able to take showers and use large bodies of water. Overall, I’d rate ‘wanger bangers’ a ten out of ten on the fun scale! Unfortunately, all we got was a little bit of thunder but the advantage of that was that nobody was electrocuted AND we still got to eat outside! Brilliant! We had chicken nuggets for dinner (I swear today has been heaven as far as food is considered) with Fluff. Oh Fluff, you are so loved. As someone from the North of the UK, I’d never actually had fluff before. I’d never had a s’more either (something I learned was quite a sacrilegious crime). I can now proudly say that I have tried, and enjoyed, both of these delicious treats!

Our EP tonight was Counselor Cabaret which went down an absolute storm! We had such a variety of acts from the counselors and CITs. One of my personal favorites was Rob and Oli’s duet on the guitar which was sung in a surprisingly high tone. Other notable mentions were the magnificent piece from the ‘swim team’ and Bryce’s amazing vocal performance. Everyone did so well and the evening was brought to a close with the traditional 4th of August celebrations. We got a WHOLE box of sparklers each. I didn’t even know what to do with myself. What a brilliant day!
