Fernwood Cove – 7/4Posted by on July 05, 2016

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY FERNWOOD COVE FAMILIES!!

As today was Monday, we celebrated a couple of Fernwood Cove favorites; in addition to it being America’s birthday, it was also MEXICAN MONDAY and MINI COURSE MONDAY.

To celebrate the Fourth, campers headed up to flag raising in a sea of red, white, and blue and got to stay in “dress down” all day. From tutus to necklaces to leggings to hats, the girls all found a unique and fun way to express their patriotism.

Following breakfast, the girls got to sign up for mini courses, an Evening Program that occurs every Monday night where multiple activities are hosted all around camp and the girls are called up one bunk at a time to put their name down for one. Options were endless, including music appreciation, touch rugby, baking apple pie and ice cream, making flower crowns and fused glass, making fairy houses, dog washing and countless more. Mini courses took place after dinner and they were all a success!

Another highlight of the day was Mexican Monday. This is a new tradition that our new chef, Keith, has started this year. All three meals were Mexican dishes, including Mexican-style scrambled eggs, fajitas (a personal favorite), and churros for dessert at lunch. In addition, at lunch we celebrated campers, C.I.T.s, and staff that have been here for five or ten years. Necklaces with an “FC” charm were given out to all celebrating their fifth year and two staff members received a blanket for spending ten years at the Cove. They celebrated with chocolate ice cream cake.

Overall, the weather was amazing today: warm and sunny (and finally not raining)! In culinary arts this week we’re teaching the girls how to make foods with dietary restrictions (gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan). A few girls were hesitant at first because of the typical belief associated with substituted ingredients that they aren’t as good as the real thing, but after we made spring rolls yesterday and cupcakes today (that multiple people said were actually better than the gluten and dairy alternative), they all realized how delicious this food can be! We’re hoping that girls with these dietary restrictions and girls that have friends with dietary restrictions can now cook food everyone can enjoy!

Lastly, we concluded a perfect day with sparklers to celebrate the holiday. Each camper got a box of sparklers to light and enjoy with their friends. Tomorrow is an early start because it’s TRIP DAY!

Hope you all had an incredible Fourth of July!!
