Fernwood Cove – 7/5Posted by Beigette Gill on July 06, 2016
Tuesday’s Blog was written by 6th Grade Buncle and Sailing Counselor, Will.
Another beautiful Tuesday here in vacation land with the sun shining down from a cloudless sky. Early this morning as the campers came from their bunks to flag raising there was an air of excitement buzzing around the camp as today was a day with a difference, no focuses were held and instead kids were rushed off to various different locations for their long awaited trip day! A hearty breakfast of french toast served with scrambled eggs was quickly eaten before the kids separated into their different groups for the day to make packed lunches to eat when they where out on their adventures. Some of the campers had to prepare for a longer excursion as they went on an overnight trip, particularly the 8th graders who went on their long awaited trip to Acadia national park where they would be putting their rock climbing skills to the test.
Each trip was accompanied by a selection of our fantastic counselors who each had a specific role to ensure the trip ran smoothly; trip leader, driver, life guard and first-aid trained. The kids gathered in the chick and waited for their trip to be called while they checked they had their water bottles, sun cream, smiling faces and thirst for adventure! Trip day excursions included hiking in different locations like Bradbury Mt, Range Pond state park and White Lakes. All the hikes lead to a beautiful location to end on such as a lake, river or rock pool where the campers could cool off and relax for a few hours. Other activities included canoeing, disc golf and cliff jumping at the two well known spots Coos canyon and Frenchmans hole. Once a trip had been called the campers hopped into their vans and off they went. The whole day was organised by our fantastic tripping counselor Heidi who did a fantastic job at getting everyone off and out for the day by 10 am with all the necessary information they needed to have a fun filled day away from camp.
Seven campers went to a little secret gem tucked away on the Maine/New Hampshire border known as rattle snake pool. Just a short 30 minute hike from the parking spot after finding our way through the woods with the stunning mountains in the background we came across a stunning gorge which led down to small flowing waterfall which led into an incredibly deep rock pool. With water as clear as a Samsung HD television the campers where quick to jump in to cool off after the hot sweaty walk. The water flowed fresh from the mountains, so it was incredibly refreshing, all be it a bit on the chilly side, but this didn’t dampen the campers spirits as they jumped from the rock ledges either side of the pool to get into the water and then sat back above the pool to eat their lunches. The rest of the day was spent moving from the pool to relax in the sun and read their books or chat with each other other. Of course no trip day would be complete without getting ice cream on the way home, a well deserved treat after a long hike there and back to the pool.
Once all the campers who were not going on an overnight had returned to camp we gathered for dinner which was a Fernwood Cove favorite, grilled cheese sandwiches with soup. The evening program this evening was outdoor bunk time which many bunks did with their entire grade as quite a few campers from each bunk were away on overnights. As the sun set on Fernwood Cove, many of the girls were allowed to play with the many baby bunnies we have at our camp, they got their first taste of being able to run on fresh grass which was great fun for the girls.
