The Importance of a Bunk FamilyPosted by on June 27, 2017

One of the most exciting parts of arriving at camp for the girls is finding out who they will be a part of their bunk family for the next 3 weeks. Some of these campers they will have met before and some will be completely new faces, others may be their closest friends from previous years at summer camp. The people they share their bunk with will soon enough turn into their family and together will make the summer magical.

The Bunk Family

Campers bunk family will be the first people they will look for when getting off the bus each summer. They are also the final goodbyes when it comes to the end of camp. The bunk is a very intimate environment and perfect for campers to make life long memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

A bunk family for nine 5th Graders will consist of a 2 Bunk Mom’s, a Bunk Aunt, a Bunk Uncle(Buncle) an a Bunk Cousin. The two Moms live in the bunk along with the campers and basically fill the role of a parent. They help the girls get up and dressed for each activity, help them learn how to look after themselves and work as a team to keep their bunk tidy.  But most importantly they make sure the girls are happy. The Bunk Aunt, Uncle and Cousin live separately in another bunk. They are an integral aspect of the bunk family and are there to support the campers whenever they are in need.

The Bunk Family Is There For Everything

Living as a Bunk family allows for the girls to learn how to live alongside others and as a team in such a small environment. The Bunks will have a mixture of people whose personalities will differ from person to person, which allows the girls to improve social development. Within each bunk, everyone has responsibilities, and everyone deserves each other’s respect, and all will benefit from the friendships that those relationships can bring.

Being a part of a Bunk family makes the campers feel at home and allows them to feel close to and put trust in both campers and counselors. The bunk family does the same things as a normal family would do. From eating meals together, to keeping their bunks tidy, to getting ready for bed together and reading stories to one another. Most importantly, Bunk Families are there to support each other. This could involve comforting them when they are feeling home sick or cheering them on for conquering one of their fears… the Bunk Family is there for everything!

Being in a Bunk family is something very few can say they have been a part of, but it is a very special opportunity for all of Fernwood Cove. Many memories are made during their time at camp, but memories that are made within the bunks are unique to each and every bunk and will remain special forever.
