Summer Camp Friendships Create Lifetime FriendshipsPosted by on July 04, 2017

There is a great line in the Fernwood Cove video, “They’re all invited to my wedding, ALL OF THEM!”  At first this sounds a bit over-the-top, but after 10 days at Fernwood Cove it sounds completely normal. Building friendships at Fernwood Cove is the number one reason that the girls return to camp each summer. No matter how many 180’s they do on a wakeboard, or how many tennis balls they serve, or rock walls they climb, it would not be as extraordinary without their friends. Their summer camp friendships are the reason that they come back. It’s the reason they love camp.

Summer Camp Friendships Are A Circle of Friends

Fernwood Cove girls constantly build friendships. They cheer on old friends in an activity. And they make brand new ones in the Feeder at lunch time. Every day is a new opportunity for campers to expand their circle of friends. Many of the activities at camp foster teamwork. Campers develop trust in others as they work together to accomplish a tasks together. Even if things do not always work out perfectly, the girls will have made a new friend. And they can both laugh about the time they goofed up, and then celebrate the next time they nail it.

Lifetime Friendships

Friendships are best developed through shared experiences. When the girls live together in the bunks. This takes the friendships to a new level. Each morning campers work as a team to clean the bunk. And they develop trust in their bunkmates as they all contribute to getting the job done. They bond during rest hour as they catch up on their days and talk about what is still to come. However, friendships really grow during Bunk Family time, when the girls and the counselors get together to discuss the whole day.  Additionally they set goals for the days to come. This is when the girls really come into their own, and open up with each other. Resulting in the truest of friendships.

As much as the girls love the activities here, the friendships are what they really love. After 10 days of camp it’s clear that making friends is just as important to the girls as any activity they are in. If you were to take away friendships Fernwood Cove would cease to be extraordinary. The line about all the girls being invited to the wedding doesn’t seem silly. In fact, it is just the opposite. It is just what one would expect. Summer camp friendships are lifetime friendships.  They are anything but ordinary.
