4th of JulyPosted by Beigette Gill on July 05, 2017
4th of July at camp this summer was an extra special day as it was also TRIP DAY! Campers were out of camp for the day and many out on overnights. Therefore the festivities were celebrated a day later, so HAPPY FIFTH OF JULY! The beautiful thing about living in our Extraordinary World is being able to make changes that help our community. Fernwood Cove’s 4th of July traditions include: bunk decorating, dressing up, and sparklers.
Bunk Decorating
The Sunday before the 4th of July, all bunks were provided with a kit of red, white, & blue decorations. Campers then spent rest hour decorating their bunks for the holiday. It was extraordinary to witness the campers work together as a team to make their bunks look the best it possibly can. It is a fun few days to walk down the bunk line and see our normally green and white bunks looking so festive.
Dressing Up
The camp community is also invited to dress up in their best red, white and blues. It is a strange but fun sensation to go about the day and see our normally green and white camp filled with some different colors. Outfits often include bandanas, high socks, beaded necklaces, face paint, and much more. The girls really enjoy the day of free dress and the opportunity to show some spirit.
Sparklers
Finally, this special day is completed with everyone gathering for an evening of sparklers. After evening program, the lawn surrounding the flag poll is filled with light and laughter as campers and counselors light their sparklers and take pictures together. It is one of the most beautiful evenings of camp watching the field light up from sparklers and laughter.
At Fernwood Cove, the Fourth of July (or in this year’s case, the Fifth of July) is both ordinary and extraordinary. While it is still a regular focus day, it is a day filled with a little extra sparkle and fun. The 4th of July is an opportunity for our camp community to come together in celebration and in honor of the country in which we are all lucky enough to spend our summer.
