An Extraordinary Camp needs Extraordinary Evening ProgramsPosted by on July 06, 2017

The second week at Fernwood Cove began with as much enthusiasm and energy as the first.  As friendships are solidified, new memories are being made.  And there’s nothing better than Evening Programs to round off each day! Evening Programs provide opportunities for campers, CITs and counselors to interact in fun and meaningful events.  Of course the usual silliness is thrown in.  Additionally, they build on campers’ skills that they are learning both in focus activities and in the bunks.

Campfire

The week kicked off with our second campfire of the session. Campfire is an integral part of Fernwood Cove; campers, counselors and CITs all join hands in song and story to reflect on the week that has passed. The calm evening air is broken by our shouts and singing about a little red wagon and Moxie the moose. This week we enjoyed a new song, a happy little tune about paddling a canoe.  It was an instant hit!  Camp is a place buried in tradition and history, but a new campfire song is always welcomed with open arms!

The camp community watches the flames dance and shimmer in the setting sun. And Alicia finishes campfire by guiding everyone through a co-created rainstorm.  Different sounds are made using our hands to replicate rainfall and wind.  With the rainstorm as our soundtrack, we are reminded how we are one with nature. And how we are all connected as a community.

Performance Night

Week Two marked our first Performance Night for campers. Throughout Week One, campers in Performing Arts focuses have been hard at work preparing to sing, dance and act their hearts out on stage. There was a wide variety of talent, from freestyle and ballet, to guitar, and The Lion King.  Campers step out of their comfort zones and showcase themselves in the spotlight. Campers come out of their shell and perform to the best of their ability. The safe and encouraging community of Fernwood Cove is perfect for campers to stretch their comfort zones.  And each performance receives enormous cheers and applause that make any nervous camper happy.

Age Group Activities

Trip Day was followed by a range of Age Group Activities for campers who were not on overnight trips and remained in camp for the evening.  These activities are the perfect time for bunks in the same grade to interact and get to know each other in a relaxed but fun environment. 2nd and 3rd grade bunks had a dance party on the dock, 4th grade played an intense game of Gaga Ball, while 8th grade participated in teambuilding activities in the forest. Age Group Activities encourage campers to remember how important communication and cooperation are in camp, while providing an opportunity to strengthen bonds between bunks, campers and counsellors included.

An extraordinary camp needs extraordinary evening programs. The spirit of camp is alive in each campfire, each performance night, each outdoor activity, no matter how big or small. Campers can take the experiences and skills learned throughout the day and utilize them. Evening Programs prove to be some of the most memorable times for campers, they encourage us to be our very best selves, and share ourselves with those around us in this extraordinary setting.
