Prepare Your Daughter for Camp: 10 TipsPosted by Beigette Gill on February 27, 2026
Introduction
Sending your daughter to sleep away camp is an exciting milestone — and for many families, it’s also the first extended time apart. Whether she’s attending camp for the first time or returning to Fernwood Cove, thoughtful preparation helps girls feel confident, independent, and ready for an unforgettable summer.
If you’re wondering how to prepare your daughter for sleepaway camp, these 10 expert tips will help set her up for success.
1. Start Preparing Early for Sleep Away Camp
Preparation for girls summer camp should begin a few months in advance. Review the packing list together, shop for camp gear, and talk through what daily life at Fernwood Cove looks like.
Starting early reduces last-minute stress, builds excitement, and gives your daughter time to prepare.
2. Review Camp Expectations Together
Spend time reviewing the Fernwood Cove website, Parent Resource Book (PRB), and camp videos. Use this opportunity to discuss camp rules, expectations, respect, responsibility and Fernwood Cove values..
We also encourage scheduling an orientation video call with Rachel prior to camp so your daughter can ask questions and feel connected before arrival.
3. Build Independence Before Camp Begins
Encourage your daughter to make her bed, put away laundry, organize belongings, and manage simple daily routines. If possible, have her spend a night away from home to practice independence and build confidence.
4. Let Her Help Pack for Camp
Involving your daughter in the packing process builds ownership and independence. At Fernwood Cove, campers unpack their belongings with counselor support, so knowing what she packed is important.
5. Label Everything (First & Last Name!)
Be sure to label swimwear, sneakers, rain gear, socks, sunscreen, bug spray, two water bottles, and flashlights with her FIRST and LAST name. Use black or silver Sharpies for best results.
6. Connect with Her Fernwood Cove Sister
New campers are paired with returning campers — their Cove Sister. Connecting before camp eases nerves, builds belonging, and provides helpful guidance. This will be communicated to parents via email in early May.
7. Prepare for Homesickness at Camp
Homesickness is normal. Reassure your daughter that missing home is common and will pass. Encourage coping strategies such as writing letters, talking to counselors, bringing photos, staying engaged in activities and most importantly socializing and making friends.
8. Avoid Pickup Deals
Avoid promising early pickup if she feels homesick. Express confidence in her ability to succeed and trust the camp support system so she can fully immerse in the experience.
9. Teach Self-Advocacy Skills
Practice asking for help, speaking up about concerns, and communicating respectfully. Role-playing scenarios can help her feel confident advocating for herself at camp.
10. Keep a Positive, Confident Attitude
Your mindset matters. Focus on the fun activities, new friendships, and growth opportunities ahead. Show pride in her bravery for trying something new.
Bonus Tips for Younger Campers
Practice good hygiene habits before camp. Send pre-addressed stamped envelopes for letter writing (Fernwood Cove has two designated letter-writing days weekly). Consider sending a handwritten letter ahead of time to be waiting in her cabin with encouraging words.
