Neatness BannersPosted by on August 07, 2016

Saturday is a special day at the Cove as it marks the first day of the activity week, so this morning the excited squeals and giggling of the campers are heard throughout camp a little while before reveille! This morning is even more extra special because it signified the beginning of the BEST (last) week of activities! The excitement today began way before flag-raising even started, as the campers ran to compare their schedules with their friends and cove sisters.

After flag-raising, we were lucky enough to devour a feast of waffles and oatmeal for breakfast which readied us for the impending clean-up of each bunk. The bunk that I am a proud bunk mom for, Goldfinch, are on track for the Neatness Moose, so this was somewhat of a breeze! When the bell rings at 9.20 we all leave for the first activity of the day, beginning in five minutes’ time.

Unlike the campers, I only experience one activity in camp, and that is ceramics. The first day of the activity week in ceramics is always an action-packed one, with many name-games played and lots of techniques and skills explained. It is a lovely chance for the girls to get to know each and for us to get to know the girls. The theme in ceramics this week is ‘Fernwood Cove and Maine’ so ideas ranging from lighthouse lanterns to Cove sister gifts were put forward. It was fantastic to meet some new faces and hear these new ideas.

Lunch was incredibly exciting because it was a Fernwood Cove first – Chinese! The amazing platter put before us included Chinese dumplings, the most delicious rice and a chicken stir-fry to go with it. Dessert also created a wave of excitement because it was ice cream sundaes. What a feast! The ‘fluff table’ also made an appearance at dinner which caused a great deal of excitement.

EP (Evening Program) tonight was a Fernwood Cove favorite – camp fire!! Everyone sang their hearts out and the flames burned bright. The neatness banners were given out to signify the beginning of a new week, the sun set to allow the beautiful crescent moon to rise, and the sounds of taps played to end another Extraordinary day at the Cove.
