Arrival Day In The Extraordinary WorldPosted by on June 25, 2017

It was the day we’ve all been waiting for here at Fernwood Cove… Arrival Day in the Extraordinary World! Campers from all over were welcomed to 350 Island Pond Road. For some it was their very first time. For others it was returning home. As a former camper, there are few moments that feel as thrilling as driving down Island Pond Road and seeing the waterfront across the lake for the first time since the previous summer. New friendships and adventures await every person who has the distinct pleasure of spending a summer at Fernwood Cove.  The day was truly an extraordinary arrival to summer camp.

New Summer Home

Days before, counselors from each bunk were busy creating decorative themes for their bunks. Hours were spent cutting out paper stars, leaves, clouds, flowers, and more! These themes are our way to add a little extra color and camp magic to the bunks. This helps campers instantly feel welcomed into their new summer home. Some of this year’s themes include: jungle, outer space, fairy forest, and beach paradise. When the bunks were finally filled with campers, it was time to unpack those giant duffle bags and get everyone organized for the next three and a half weeks.

As per tradition, dinner was spaghetti and meatballs!

Passing the Torch

Every night after dinner the girls attend an Evening Program or “EP”. For the first EP of each summer the counselors prepare a show that highlights each of the activities offered during camp. Everyone gathers in the Chick for an evening full of silly skits, songs, and plenty of bad dancing. It’s our way to introduce ourselves and the many exciting opportunities that await the girls.

Our first Senior tradition, lighting the torch, occurred after Staff Show.  This tradition completes the passing of the torch for the Seniors as leaders in the camp community.  Following the passing of the torch the senior campers received their Senior Fernwood Cove blankets.

Welcome to Bunk Circles

After evening program campers, CITs and counselors returned to their bunks for Bunk Circles. This is a tradition that allows the girls and their counselors to come together and reflect on their days at camp. Bunk Circles also campers develop relationships with each other while sharing their appreciation for their summer camp experiences. In the early days of camp bunk families also discuss their expectations for their shared living spaces. Arrival Day closes with “Taps” and lights out, ensuring that everyone is ready for their first full day in the Extraordinary World.
