Bunk Moms in the Extraordinary WorldPosted by on July 02, 2017

When sending your child to summer camp she is leaving behind a motherly figure who looks after her in all the times of her life. This may be an exciting, unique or rather challenging time for the camper. However, they are provided with Bunk Moms who are ready to become a motherly figure in the Extraordinary World.  Bunk Moms form a connection like none other.

Living with Campers

As a Bunk Mom, these women live with a group of campers who have all just completed the same grade in school. Being a bunk mom means living in the same room, sharing the same space, and being their for “their girls” around the clock. The campers and Bunk Moms also work together and cooperate to keep their space tidy and organized.  Ultimately working towards the prized “Neatness Moose.” They both live together as they would in the ordinary world, only it is a different environment allowing for different experiences and memories to be created.

Campers’ Needs

One of the primary roles of bunk moms is to take care of each of her campers’ needs.  This could range from sitting with a homesick camper until she falls asleep, or helping them apply sunblock on the small places they can’t reach. There is also encouragement in helping the camper choose new activities.  Additionally Bunk Moms are there to help campers develop new friendships with their bunkmates. The campers know that they can always rely on their Bunk Moms to help them.

Bunk Moms Form Bonds with Campers

The bonds formed between a camper and her bunk moms make their time in the Extraordinary World special. This connection often forms at the beginning of the session.  Campers and counselors share photos and memories of their life at home as a starting point to get to know each other. This connection deepens through the memories they create together at camp. Memories like a bunk mom jumping in the lake to encourage her camper who is completing the swim test.  Or enjoying a s’more by the campfire. It’s a combination of the little things and big moments that creates an intricate bond between camper and her Bunk Mom in the Extraordinary World.

Through the roller coaster of emotions and whirlwind of experiences, the job as a Bunk Mom is a challenging time.  But is completely worth the rewards that come with it. It is an experience like no other. And it must be seen to be believed. Both campers and Bunk Moms leave camp keeping this connection close to their heart. Everyone departs camp with the hope that “it won’t be long and we’ll be back next summer.”
